Toyota Calya/Daihatsu Sigra Spotted – A Perodua Bezza MPV?

Earlier in May, we’ve reported that undisguised images of Toyota and Daihatsu’s upcoming low-cost MPV, to be called Toyota Calya and Daihatsu Sigra, have been leaked to the Indonesian press.

Today, the folks at Indonesia’s AutoNetzMag.com have uploaded a video of the Toyota Calya/Daihatsu Sigra being driven on Indonesian roads.

PT Toyota Astra Motor and PT Astra Daihatsu Motor are expected to make an official introduction for the Calya/Sigra at the coming Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) in August. Details on engine and transmission options are likely to be announced there, but we think it should be a 1.2-litre unit to comply with Indonesia's Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) requirements.

As mentioned in our earlier story, the Calya/Sigra is jointly developed by Toyota and Daihatsu, and is based on the Toyota Agya/Daihatsu Ayla – both of which are essentially a Perodua Axia with slightly different styling.

In the same way the upcoming Perodua Bezza is an Axia that has been adapted into a sedan body type, the Calya/Sigra is an Axia with a seven-seater MPV body.

As such, the Calya/Sigra is unlike to replace the Perodua Alza, which is based on the Myvi.

It is not known if Perodua has any further plans for the Axia’s platform apart from spinning off the Bezza sedan, but the prospect of a low-cost MPV that sits below the Perodua Alza is not too unreasonable. The Alza starts at RM55k for a basic 1.5 Manual model, still a bit too expensive for many low income families.
