Bermaz launches the 2025 Mazda MX-5, MX-5 35th Anniversary Edition, from RM293k to RM315k

To celebrate 35 years of thrilling motoring, Mazda is unveiled the exclusive MX-5 35th Anniversary Edition, a limited-run version of the roadster that will now be available in Malaysia through official distributors Bermaz Motor, and priced at a cool RM315,000. This special edition blends heritage-inspired elements with modern refinements, offering a truly collectible driving experience.

Also now launched and available for booking is the updated 2025 Mazda MX-5, exclusively available as the RF (Retractable Fastback) variant, which starts from RM293,000. The 35th Anniversary Edition will, of course, be available in limited numbers, with only a select few units for Malaysia, though the exact allocation number is unconfirmed.

For those keen to take a look for themselves, the 35th Anniversary Edition MX-5 will be showcased at the Bermaz Auto Showcase from April 10-13, 2025, at the Oval Concourse in 1Utama Shopping Centre, where visitors can also participate in an exclusive Mazda MX-5 photo contest. From what we understand, though, only a handful of the 35th Anniversary Edition units are due to be made available in to Malaysian buyers, so you better get lock one down ASAP!

Each generation of the MX-5, from the iconic first-generation NA to the current fourth-generation ND, has focused on providing a pure, driver-centric experience and the 35th Anniversary Edition pays tribute to this legacy, bringing together the best of both past and present. However, it seems to be focusing here on a more upmarket premium feel and exclusive cosmetics rather than mechanical upgrades.

One of the most striking features of this special edition is its exclusive Artisan Red Premium exterior colour, which you might remember on the Mazda 6 Anniversary Edition from 2023. This vibrant hue is created using Mazda’s advanced Takuminuri painting technology and is the fourth colour in Mazda’s special lineup. Artisan Red Premium is a deep, rich shade that enhances the MX-5’s sculpted lines, creating a profound sense of depth and brilliance.

The 35th Anniversary Edition also boasts several exterior enhancements, including a serialised ‘35th Anniversary’ badge on the rear fender, signifying its limited-production status. The body-coloured outer rearview mirrors and 17-inch Bright Metallic alloy wheels further elevate the car’s sporty and sophisticated presence.

Mazda has made additional updates across the 2025 MX-5 range, including new design elements and upgraded connectivity. The MX-5 now features a new 8.8-inch infotainment system with voice recognition, USB-C charging, and a high-definition reverse camera.

The exterior has been refined with new headlamps, updated rear combination lamps, and a redesigned rear bumper, all aimed at improving both aesthetics and functionality. For safety, the MX-5 now includes Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) as part of Mazda’s i-Activsense suite of driver-assistance technologies.

They also come with an upgraded driving experience via the Kinematic Posture Control system, a new DSC-TRACK (Driving Stability Control Track Mode), and an Asymmetric LSD (Limited Slip Differential), which enhance stability and handling, especially during spirited driving. However, the latter is only limited to MX-5s fitted with a manual transmission.

Lastly, the Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) system has also been updated to offer smoother, more precise handling, contributing to a more natural and responsive driving experience.

Inside, the 35th Anniversary Edition, however, goes a step further with an interior that’s plusher and outfitted a with a Sports Tan interior with matching trim on the dashboard, floor mats, and carpeting. The Tan leather/suede combination seats come with the ‘35th Anniversary’ logo embossed on the headrests, and Artisan Red Premium accents are featured on the air-conditioning vents and door panels.

That said, its engine hasn’t been lavished with the same treatment given to the exterior and interior as the 35th Anniversary Edition inherits the same 2.0-litre naturally aspirated SkyActiv-G 4-cylinder mill as the rest of the range, producing 181hp at 7,000rpm and 205Nm at 4,000rpm.

Also, disappointingly, it seems Malaysia will not be receiving any allocation of the limited run model fitted with a factory 6-speed manual transmission, though this is available to local buyers of the 2025 MX-5 RF. Instead, and unlike other markets, the 35th Anniversary Edition can only be ordered here with a 6-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
