UMW Toyota bolsters the 2025 GR Yaris range with 8-speed auto variant at RM325k, RM10k more than 6MT

To sit alongside the refreshed version of the GR Yaris with 6-speed manual transmission outed during the Season 7 finale of Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia, UMW Toyota has launched the new 8-speed automatic (GAZOO Racing Direct Automatic Transmission, or GR-DAT) variant of the rally-derived AWD mega hatch, priced at RM325,600, or a RM10,000 premium over the 6MT.

This new transmission has been developed with input from the Toyota GAZOO Racing World Rally Team and boasts rapid, precise gear shifts that adjust to the driver’s throttle and brake input. Unlike typical automatic transmissions that react solely to the car’s behaviour, this system is said to anticipate the driver's intent, offering a more responsive and engaging experience. Guess we’ll have to test how adept this gearbox is at mind-reading.

Under the bonnet, the GR Yaris retains its powerful transversely-mounted 3-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering 300 PS and 400 Nm of torque to enable a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 5.2 seconds.

The automatic gearbox isn’t merely a different variant lacking a foot pedal, but developed and is equipped with a comprehensive cooling system, including a sub-radiator, intercooler spray, and both water- and air-cooled ATF coolers, ensuring consistent performance even under Malaysia’s very warm conditions. Clearly, it’s meant to be every bit as hardcore as any punishment the rest of the car can take.

Beyond the new cog-swappers, the GR Yaris automatic introduces Launch Control, which fine-tunes engine torque and traction for a more controlled and explosive acceleration from a standstill. Combined with the fast-shifting 8-speed and motorsport-inspired paddle shifters, this version of the GR Yaris promises a driving experience that is both responsive and intuitive while being much easier to pilot at a much more mundane pace such as, say, during rush hour in Kuala Lumpur.

Just like the manual variant, the GR Yaris auto also comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, which includes upgraded Pre-Collision and Radar Cruise Control systems, Lane Tracing Assist, and Expert Mode, allowing more experienced drivers to have greater control while maintaining some level of stability.

Both the GR Supra Track Edition and the GR Yaris Automatic Variant are now available at GR Garage dealerships throughout Malaysia. These models come with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty and full aftersales support.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
