2026 Nissan Serena facelift debuts in Japan ahead of Malaysian launch of C28-generation MPV

The facelifted C28-generation Nissan Serena has officially debuted in Japan, marking the MPV’s first major update since the current generation was introduced four years ago. While Japanese buyers will be the first to receive the refreshed model, Malaysian consumers have already had a glimpse of the pre-facelift version earlier this month, with a local launch slated for the first quarter of 2026.

Visually, the updated Serena introduces a subtly reworked exterior that differentiates it from the outgoing model. The most noticeable changes are found at the front, where the grille now features a more prominent V-shaped motif (is V-motion in the room with us?), replacing the previous more horizontal design. 

This is complemented by a revised arrangement of the LED daytime running lights, giving the MPV a sharper and more contemporary face. Rounding out the exterior updates is a new alloy wheel design, adding a fresh touch to the side profile.

For the Japanese market, the C28 Serena facelift continues with two familiar powertrain options unchanged. The first is the MR20DD 2.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which delivers outputs similar to the pre-facelift model at around 150 PS and 200 Nm of torque. The second option is Nissan’s e-POWER hybrid setup, based on the HR14DDe 1.4-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine. 

In this configuration, which has also been confirmed for that imminent Malaysian launch of the C28 Serena, the engine acts solely as a generator, supplying electricity to a 163 PS and 315 Nm electric drive motor, with all-wheel-drive variants gaining an additional motor at the rear axle.

Responding to feedback from existing owners, Nissan has enhanced usability by adding a memory function to the e-Pedal one-pedal driving system that allows drivers to retain their preferred e-Pedal setting even after switching the vehicle off, eliminating the need to reselect the mode at every start-up.

In Japan, the facelifted Serena will be offered in X, Highway Star V and Luxion trim levels, with the Luxion variant that’s most analogous with what Malaysia will be getting (in pre-facelift form) is reserved exclusively for e-POWER units. 

Both the Highway Star V and Luxion also receive unique exterior styling elements, while the latter further distinguishes itself with finer interior upholstery. Buyers can also opt for the Autech Line package, which adds bespoke 16-inch alloy wheels, dark chrome grille accents, metallic-finished door mirrors, special seat materials and Autech Line badging.

Inside, the Serena continues to excel in practicality and sheer cabin space. Alongside the familiar seven- and eight-seat configurations, Nissan has introduced a new four- or five-seat Multi Box variant that replaces the third row with a large-capacity storage box that can function as a bench or table, with access from multiple sides. When the second-row seats are folded, the cargo area can even be converted into a bed using a water-resistant Cordura mat.

Technology updates include the latest NissanConnect infotainment suite with integrated Google Maps, Google Assistant and Google Play. Added convenience features include smartphone alerts if the vehicle is left unlocked, windows remain open or hazard lights are still on. Safety has also been enhanced with the introduction of a rear seat occupant reminder to prompt drivers to check the cabin before exiting.

Sales of the facelifted C28 Nissan Serena in Japan is expected to commence in February of next year, with prices starting from 2,780,000 Yen (approximately RM73k in our money). As that’s happening, Malaysian buyers can expect the Serena to arrive locally in its pre-facelift form around that same time.
