2026 Toyota Vios Hybrid quietly surfaces in Malaysia – 2 variants including GR Sport, from RM104k to RM110k

Toyota Malaysia is quietly laying the groundwork for the long-awaited Vios Hybrid, and all signs point to the 2026 Toyota Vios HEV being closer than ever. Most unusually, without a big launch event or even a dramatic announcement, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has already published a dedicated model page, brochures and even a price list on their website, the kind of material that usually appears when enquiries and bookings are about to start.

According to Toyota’s Peninsular Malaysia price list, the Vios Hybrid will be offered in two variants: the Vios 1.5 HEV AT at (an estimated?) RM103,900, and the Vios 1.5 HEV GR Sport AT at RM109,900 - both on-the-road without insurance. That places it directly in the crosshairs of the Honda City e:HEV, currently priced at RM111,900, setting up a long-awaited hybrid sedan showdown in the B-segment.

The headline, of course, is the powertrain. Toyota is billing the Vios HEV as running its fourth-generation Hybrid Electric System, with a claimed fuel consumption of just 3.6 L/100 km on the NEDC cycle. While Malaysian specifications have yet to be fully published, Thailand-market figures give us a clear idea of what to expect.

There, the Vios Hybrid (known locally as the Yaris Ativ HEV) uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated 2NR-VEX four-cylinder petrol engine producing 91 PS and 121 Nm, paired to an electric motor rated at 80 PS and 141 Nm.

Power comes from a compact 0.7 kWh lithium-ion battery mounted beneath the rear seats, with total system output quoted at 111 PS. Drive is sent to the front wheels via an e-CVT, with the petrol engine working in tandem with the motor for maximum efficiency. It goes without saying, of course, that we can expect this exact hybrid powertrain to also feature in the upcoming Yaris Cross, the Toyota-branded twin of the recently launched Perodua Traz.

Visually, the standard Vios 1.5 HEV keeps things familiar, sharing most of its bodywork with the petrol-powered model, but gaining hybrid-specific grille detailing to subtly signal what’s underneath.

Inside, the hybrid gets meaningful tech upgrades, led by a new 10.1-inch “Digital Audio” infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Ambient cabin lighting also makes its way into the package, along with an audible vehicle approach system to alert pedestrians at low speeds.

The GR Sport variant is where Toyota turns up the visual and dynamic flair. It features a GR Sport-specific front bumper, grille and full aerokit, plus larger 17-inch alloy wheels shod with sportier rubber. Toyota is also fitting the GR Sport with a unique suspension tune, featuring revised springs and dampers aimed at giving the hybrid sedan a slightly sharper edge in the bends.

Inside, the GR Sport treatment continues with sport-themed leather and suede combination upholstery, silver trim accents and an otherwise blacked-out cabin theme. Like the standard HEV, it also gets the larger 10.1-inch infotainment screen with wireless smartphone connectivity.

Toyota is also using colour strategy to separate the two variants with the regular Vios HEV offered in Platinum White Pearl, Spicy Scarlet SE, Attitude Black, Silver Metallic and a hybrid-exclusive Celestite Grey Metallic that we’ve already seen in the Corolla Cross Hybrid. The Vios HEV GR Sport narrows the palette to Platinum White Pearl, Spicy Scarlet SE and Attitude Black, with the first two also available as GR Sport-only two-tone finishes paired with a black roof.

Warranty is a major part of Toyota’s pitch as the Vios HEV comes with a 5-year, unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty, plus an 8-year, unlimited-mileage warranty for the hybrid battery, inverter and power management unit. Toyota has even listed an optional extended hybrid warranty for years 9 and 10, along with accessories and service packages, another strong hint that the Vios Hybrid is already being prepared for customer orders and swift deliveries.

While Toyota Malaysia hasn’t made a big song and dance about it yet, the message from its own website is clear: the Vios Hybrid is no longer a distant promise. The pages are live, the brochures are downloadable, the prices are out, and there’s even a “Book Your Toyota” prompt waiting. For Malaysian buyers who have been holding out for a hybrid Vios, the wait may finally be coming to an end.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
