Chery Malaysia sponsors inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup youth badminton tournament with RM100k prize

Chery Malaysia has been confirmed as the official sponsor of the first-ever Lee Chong Wei Cup, which is set to take place later this year. The new youth badminton tournament was established by national sporting legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei, with a clear focus on developing young players and strengthening grassroots badminton in Malaysia.

Unlike most junior-level competitions, the Lee Chong Wei Cup will receive nationwide exposure, as matches will be broadcast over Astro and is also backed by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). Young shuttlers will compete across boys’ and girls’ singles and doubles categories in the under-13, under-15 and under-17 age groups, alongside mixed doubles for under-17 players. In total, 128 slots will be available across all divisions.

Adding to the tournament’s appeal is a total prize pool of RM100,000, which is believed to be the largest ever offered for a youth badminton competition in Malaysia. Beyond the cash rewards, standout performers will also be given the opportunity to attend trial sessions with BAM, potentially opening the door to a future national pathway. Organisers have indicated that further details, including confirmed dates, will be revealed in the coming weeks.

For Chery, the sponsorship marks another chapter in its growing involvement in Malaysian sports. The Chinese automotive brand has previously demonstrated its support for local athletes by rewarding Malaysia’s Olympic medallists at the 2024 Paris Olympics with prize cars, as well as backing the national contingent at the Asian Youth Para Games.

“At Chery, we believe in investing in the future of sports. Our intention has always been to
nurture young talent and support the ecosystem around them. As one of Malaysia’s
fastest-growing international automotive brands, we are proud to support initiatives that shape
the nation’s sporting future,” said Lee Wen Hsiang Chery Malaysia Vice President.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
