2027 Porsche Taycan BEV gets E-Shift with eight virtual gears & simulated engine braking

Porsche has unveiled a series of updates for the 2027 model year Taycan, headlined by a new E-Shift system that introduces virtual gear changes and simulated engine braking in a bid to make the BEV driving experience more 'engaging'.

Available across the Taycan range, the optional E-Shift system allows drivers to shift through eight simulated gears using paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel.

According to Porsche, the system replicates the sensations associated with a conventional performance car, including noticeable shift jolts, gear-specific drag torque and even a virtual rev limiter.

The system also works alongside an enhanced version of Porsche Electric Sport Sound, with both the interior and exterior sound profiles adapting according to the selected virtual gear and simulated motor speed. A virtual rev counter and gear indicator with shift lights are also displayed in the instrument cluster.

Drivers can either leave E-Shift in automatic mode or take manual control using the steering wheel-mounted paddles. The feature comes standard on the Taycan Turbo GT, while it will be offered as an option on other Taycan variants.

Beyond the new E-Shift technology, Porsche has also introduced a Manthey Kit for the Taycan Turbo GT with Weissach Package. Available directly from the factory for the first time, the package adds aerodynamic, chassis and powertrain upgrades designed to improve track performance.

The updated Taycan also gains Porsche's latest-generation infotainment system. The new Porsche Digital Interaction interface features a redesigned layout, faster processing performance, configurable widgets and a 3D vehicle model displayed in the actual colour of the customer's car.

Voice control has also been upgraded with AI-powered functionality, allowing for more natural conversations and follow-up questions without repeatedly saying "Hey Porsche".

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration have been further expanded, while over-the-air software updates are now supported for the infotainment system.

Porsche has also improved efficiency for selected rear-wheel-drive Taycan variants. New low rolling resistance summer tyres, combined with the optional Performance Battery Plus, enable a WLTP-rated driving range of up to 700 km, making it the longest-range Taycan yet.
