Chery Malaysia kicks off 18-month mangrove restoration initiative in Kuala Selangor

Chery Corporate Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. has officially launched an 18-month mangrove restoration initiative in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS).

Known as the Cherish the Nature project, the programme was inaugurated at Kuala Selangor Nature Park and focuses on rehabilitating mangrove ecosystems along the North-central Selangor Coast.

The launch event drew more than 200 participants, including members of the public as well as owners from Chery’s WCWL community and Omoda | Jaecoo’s J-Club. Attendees took part in hands-on mangrove planting sessions while learning about the science and environmental importance behind mangrove conservation.

Stretching across approximately 130 kilometres, the North-central Selangor Coast is recognised for its diverse ecosystems and rich marine life. The area is also a popular ecotourism destination, famed for its firefly colonies, migratory shorebirds and resident primates.

However, these fragile coastal environments are increasingly under threat due to land clearing and changes in land use, which have contributed to the steady loss of mangrove forests in the region.

Through this initiative, Chery Corporate Malaysia aims to restore at least six hectares of degraded mangrove areas. The project is administered by IUCN and co-implemented with MNS, with restoration efforts guided by science-based methods, including the use of mangrove sapling nurseries established within the project area.
