2016 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Launched, RM 423,888

Variety is the spice of life. As part of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s relentless product offensive, they have launched the GLC Coupe, alongside the GLS and G-Class. Each of these models comes in a single variant, and in the case of the GLC Coupe it will be the GLC 250 4MATIC, with AMG Line components. In a nutshell, the GLC Coupe is to the GLC what the GLE Coupe is to the GLE, in that they are largely similar but sport wildly different rooflines.

Let’s start off with what’s the same between the GLC Coupe and the GLC. They both sit on the same C-Class platform, as per Mercedes-Benz’s naming scheme. They both have the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system as standard, which provides excellent stability in even the trickiest of situations. They also have the same powerplant: a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-4 with 211 hp and 350 Nm of torque from 1,200 rpm to 4,000 rpm. They share the 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission, which is proven to be fairly sharp when you want it to be, and smooth when you need it to cruise.

The similarities are in the interior as well. With the AMG Line, the GLC Coupe has slightly different seats and various trim pieces- AMG pedals, AMG floormats, and the like- which would make it identical to the regular GLC as it also comes with the AMG Line package. There is an optional Burmester sound system that goes for an extra RM 5,000 if the owner so wishes to specify it.

On the outside, this is where the differences emerge. It looks very much like a baby GLE Coupe, so you wouldn’t be totally at fault if you mistook it for one. The AMG Line also brings 20-inch alloy rims and more aggressive bumpers, although we have little to compare it against as there isn’t a non AMG model on sale.

Feature wise, the specs are identical as well. Front and side airbags, Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Crosswind Assist, Attention Assist, Active Parking Assistant, Distronic Plus active cruise-control system, Steering Assist- these are all available on both the GLC cand the GLC Coupe. For now, the only direct rival to the GLC Coupe would be the BMW X4, and the two are pretty evenly matched on price and specs. The GLC Coupe goes for RM 423,888- on the road with GST, but without insurance.
