Mazda 6 Facelift Launched In Australia, Now With Turbo Power

Mazda Australia has just introduced a new facelifted version of the Mazda 6, the second facelift for the current generation model. The new Mazda 6 can now be had with a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine, which is identical to the one found in the Mazda CX-9.

The 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine does 228 hp and 420 Nm, mirroring that of the Mazda CX-9. Other engine choices include a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre petrol unit (188 hp/252 Nm) and a 2.2-litre SkyActiv-D turbodiesel (188 hp/450 Nm).

All variants of the Mazda 6 are mated to a six-speed automatic, sending power to the front wheels.

Visually, the facelifted Mazda 6 features an evolutionary design that looks refreshing yet familiar at the same time.

Gone are the horizontal slats on the front grille, now replaced with a diamond pattern that is reminiscent of the new Mazda CX-5. Chrome strips from the grille that previously went above the headlights now extend below the headlights.

The rear end has also been subtly updated. The chrome strip above the number plate now extends into the tail lights, which on the earlier model, gave the impression that the tail lights had eyebrows. Towards the bottom of the rear bumper, Mazda has reduced the size of the rear diffuser piece, giving the new Mazda 6 a sleeker appeal.

Moving inside, the updated Mazda 6 gets a refreshed cabin. The steering wheel is new, lifted from the second generation CX-5. Out goes the flip-type heads-up display, replaced by a new Active Driving Display, that projects images onto the windscreen.

Safety has also been improved, as Mazda has fitted radar cruise control with stop and go feature. This complements the already generous list of equipment, which include traffic sign recognition, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitoring, Smart City Brake Support, and a reverse camera.

For the Australian market, the Mazda 6 is available in both sedan and wagon guises. Both versions of the Mazda 6 are available in 7 variants, bringing the grand total of variants offered to 14.

Launch in Malaysia should be imminent, seeing that our models come fully-imported from Japan.
