BMW X3M and X4M World Debut – M Performance Versions With 510 hp

BMW’s M division has further expanded its high-performance model line-up with the introduction of the X3 M and X4 M SUVs. This is the first time both SUVs receive the full-fledged M Division tuning and name, as well as more powerful M Competition variants.

The newly developed 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine is the most powerful BMW six-cylinder ever, producing 480 hp with peak torque 600 Nm. The X3 and X4 M Competition variants develop 30 hp more, at 510 hp.

The engine is coupled with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission which distributes power to all four wheels through an M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which made its debut it the (F90) M5.

Like the M5, the BMW X3 M and X4 M system will have a rear-wheel bias and offers two AWD driving modes. The centrally controlled interaction between M xDrive and the Active M Differential at the rear axle allows the all-wheel-drive system to split the engine’s power between the four wheels as required.

The X3 M and X4 M accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, the M Competition variants do it 0.1 seconds quicker.

To marshal all that power the X3 M and X4 M specially tuned Adaptive M suspension with three selectable settings, M-specific steering (including M Servotronic and variable ratio), M compound brakes, and standard 20-inch alloys wheels.

The DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system allows controlled wheel slip in M Dynamic Mode which can also be switched off.

Visually, the X3 M and X4 M receive redesigned front and rear bumpers optimised for better cooling (at the front) and overall aerodynamics. The M Competition package adds an additional body bracing package, a ‘track-ready’ cooling system, 21-inch wheels, and gloss black exterior design elements. An optional carbon trim package is available too. Two exclusive M colours are offered: Toronto Red Metallic and Donington Grey Metallic.

Inside, electrically adjustable sports seats, Vernasca leather upholstery, M-specific cockpit, M leather steering wheel, and M gearshift selector lever help create a sporty ambiance.

The M Competition models receive M Sport seats trimmed in Merino leather and model-specific door sill plates. Optionally, the M Competition models are also offered with special bi-colour leather upholstery variants with Alcantara applications.
