Detroit 2018: Honda Insight Returns As An All-New Model, To Debut Later This Year

Honda unveiled the all-new Insight prototype at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, giving consumers a preview of its latest electrified vehicle in its ever-growing lineup. When the production version of the all-new Insight is launched later this year, it will be positioned above the Civic in Honda’s passenger car lineup.

Thanks to its long wheelbase platform, the all-new Insight is able to offer class-leading passenger space, above its compact hybrid rivals. Additionally, Honda says that the all-new Insight offers refined driving performance plus high fuel efficiency, which the company claims to return at least 21 km/L.

Inside, the all-new Honda Insight boasts an optional heated leather steering wheel, eight-inch Display Audio infotainment system plus a seven-inch digital LCD instrument cluster. The Display Audio system in the Insight can be equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, on top of WiFi-enabled over-the-air (OTA) system updates.

As for the all-new Insight’s powertrain, Honda will be offering the new model with a highly-efficient 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine hooked up to the company's two-motor hybrid system. Under normal driving conditions, the Insight will be powered by the electric motor only, drawing energy from the engine which works as a generator or battery pack. As the battery pack is located under the rear seats, boot space is not compromised, and the aforementioned rear seats can be had with 60:40 split folding capabilities.

Honda Sensing is fitted as standard across the range, which includes Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Departure Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow and new Traffic Sign Recognition. Honda’s LaneWatch system is included on the Insight EX and above.

Assembly of the all-new Honda Insight will start later this year at Honda’s Greensburg, Indiana production facility. The same plant also assembles the Civic and CR-V.

The all-new Honda Insight will be launched in North America later this year as a 2019 model year.
