GIIAS 2015: Lexus RX Previewed In Indonesia

The all-new Lexus RX made an appearance at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show today, a few months after it made its global debut in New York.

Seen here in the F Sport trim, the RX is shown as just a preview and is not officially launched in Indonesia as of yet. In fact, the luxury SUV has yet to debut in other ASEAN countries either and that includes Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.

A radical departure in terms of looks from its predecessor, the fourth generation RX adopts many of the styling cues from the more recent Lexus offerings, chief among which includes the company’s trademark spindle grille seen here. The mesh grille is flanked by full LED headlamps with L-shaped daytime running lights while the bottom of the grille extends to triangular fog lamp enclosures.

The bigger fender flares lend a more muscular look to the RX while the main design highlight is the blacked-out C-pillar, giving an illusion of a floating roof. Overall, the aggressive design is sure to draw the attention of those who gaze upon the RX.

Inside, the cabin gets a new design and layout beginning with a 12.3-inch central display screen that handles multimedia functions and navigation. While behind the wheel, the driver benefits from a colour heads-up display which projects vehicle info onto the windshield. The gear selector on the centre console is also positioned away from the instrument panel for better space, and just behind it is the Lexus touchpad to control the Enform infotainment system.

Under the metal, the all-new Lexus RX has its wheelbase stretched by 50mm compared to its predecessor and allows for more legroom. Overall, the SUV is 120mm longer, 10mm wider, and 5mm lower than the car it replaces.

During its global debut, two powertrain options were listed – a 3.5-litre V6 engine with 300hp on tap, paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission, and the other being a hybrid that combines the 3.5-litre V6 with an electric motor for a similar amount of power.
