According to Reuters, the European Parliament this week formally approved a law to effectively ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the European Union from 2035. While it's not just clear cut at the moment to how this will all work, the general rule is that manufacturers must "achieve a 100% cut in CO2 emissions from new cars sold" 2035 onwards. This rule will apply to the 27 countries that are a part of the European Union and the final approval for this law will take place next month. "The operating costs of an electric vehicle are already lower than the operating costs of a vehicle with an internal combustion engine," said Jan Huitema, the parliament's lead negotiator on the rules. He also added that it was crucial to bring more affordable electric vehicles to consumers. What this simply means is that future cars in the EU will either be powered by electricity or hydrogen, as that is what most manufacturers are focusing on. Volkwagen group, namely Porsche is working on a synthetic fuel that is carbon neutral, which can potentially keep ICE vehicles alive. Right now, this synthetic fuel, codenamed e-Fuel is however just a pilot project, so they have to hurry up if they want to save ICE vehicles. ✕ Let's Connect on Whatsapp We protect your personal information in compliance with the PDPA I agree with Carlist.my Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
