All-New BMW (F93) M8 Gran Coupe Unleashed – 600 HP, Track Mode

Just months after revealing the 8 Series Gran Coupe in all its beautiful glory, BMW has pulled the covers off the most hot-blooded versions of its four-door sportscar: the (F93) M8 Gran Coupe (GC) and M8 Competition Gran Coupe (Comp. GC).

Developed alongside the two-door variants of the new M8 and the M8 GTE endurance racecar, the M8 GC has undergone intensive testing at BMW’s Miramas and Arjeplog test centres, and fine-tuning at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit to deliver trademark BMW “M” division dynamic performance, agility, and precision.

Under the hood is a high-revving 4.4-litre turbocharged V8 engine (similar to that of the F90 M5) which develops 600 hp in the M8 GC and 625 hp in the Comp. GC, torque is identical in both cases, delivering 750 Nm between 1,800 rpm and 5,800 rpm. Cooling and oil supply systems have been optimised for track use, while an electronically controlled sports exhaust system promises quite the soundtrack at full tilt.

The engine is mated exclusively to BMW’s ‘M Steptronic’ 8-speed automatic transmission which distributes power to all four wheels through the company’s M xDrive all-wheel-drive system linked with the Active M Differential. Choice of three powertrain modes: 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD with pure rear-wheel drive and deactivated VSC mode. The M8 Comp. GC additionally has three main drive modes: Road, Sport, and Track.

In terms of performance, the M8 GC will complete the century sprint in 3.3 seconds, Comp GC gets there a smidge quicker at 3.2 seconds.

The chassis has also received some tweaks to cope with the additional power, the M8 receives an array of extremely stiff mountings connecting the suspension to the body, likewise electronically controlled dampers and electromechanical M Servotronic steering are all standard fare. For ten first time also, the new integrated braking system enables two different brake pedal application settings: Comfort and Sport.

Note too. that the M8 GC and M8 Comp. GC have a slightly longer wheelbase, at 200 mm longer than that of the two-door variants of the M8.

In terms of aesthetics – the M8 GC and Comp. GC receives subtle design elements such as blacked out Kidney Grille and side gill garnish at the front and gloss black spoiler and rear apron round the back. The M8 GC is supplied as standard 20-inch ‘M’ light-alloy wheels.

On the inside, the M8 GC receives exclusive M Sport seats, trimmed in a unique Bi-colour leather trim, and seat belts. Elsewhere, the M8 GC receives an ‘M’ leather steering wheel, newly designed gear selector lever, and redesigned graphics for the instrument cluster, Head-Up Display, main infotainment control display.

The new BMW M8 Gran Coupe and new BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe will celebrate their world premieres at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2019. The earliest market launches are slated for April 2020, when the BMW M8 GC will go up against the likes of the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes-AMG GT four-door Coupe.
