Ford 1.0L EcoBoost Wins Fourth Successive Engine Of The Year Award

In what must be true milestone for the company and its efforts in cleaner and more fuel-efficient engines, Ford’s already-renowned turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine rakes up a fourth victory at the International Engine of the Year awards in the 'Sub 1-Litre' category.

“Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost remains one of the finest examples of engine downsizing,” said Dean Slavnich, co-chairman of the 17th International Engine of the Year awards in Stuttgart, Germany. “This fantastic three-cylinder shows there is still a way to go for the internal combustion engine.”

With this, the it has fended off rivals from other manufacturers to clinch the title of ‘Best Engine Under 1.0 litres’ for the past four years. When the engine first made its debut in 2012, it was also won the ‘Best New Engine’ category.

"The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine changed the game for small petrol engines and we're proud it remains best in class despite a growing number of competitors. "The spirit of innovation that helped us create this engine is alive and well and we continue to develop new engines," said Joe Bakaj, vice president of product development, Ford Europe.

Instead of resting on its laurels, Ford is putting even more focus on the engine, developing it to further the goals the company set out during its inception. To achieve even greater fuel economy with reduced carbon emissions, the automaker is looking into the implementation of cylinder deactivation for its next revision. With collaboration from the Schaeffler Group, Ford is also working on a dual-mass flywheel for the three-pot.

Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is produced in Ford’s European facilities in Germany and Romania, with levels of tune ranging from 100PS, 125PS to 140PS and is now available in 72 countries around the globe. Notably, in Malaysia, its available in the Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
