Four-star ASEAN NCAP rating for the 2023 Perodua Axia

Four-star ASEAN NCAP rating for the 2023 Perodua Axia

The all-new 2023 Perodua Axia has been bestowed with a four-star rating from the ASEAN NCAP.

It's indeed worth a shout considering that the variant used for the crash test assessment was the 1.0L SE, the variant positioned below the range-topping Axia AV. Why? According to the ASEAN NCAP digital report, the SE variant only comes with two airbags as standard and that was good enough to get an impressive four-star rating.

The report also stated that the latest 2023 Perodua Axia model comes with two front airbags that are standard across all variants and a couple of side and curtain airbags which are labelled as 'optional' for the SE variant. On a side note, six airbags are available as standard for the range-topping Axia AV variant.

The breakdown of the four-star ASEAN NCAP rating for the 2023 Perodua Axia is as follows (73.55% overall score):

  • Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) - 25.65 out of 32 (32.06%)
  • Child Occupant Protection (COP) - 43.43 out of 51 (17.03%)
  • Safety Assist - 16.5 out of 21 (15.71%)
  • Motorcyclist Safety (MS) - 7 out of 16 (8.71%)

The digital report also stated that some safety features are labelled as 'available as optional' which could also indicate that some of these features are made available for the higher Axia AV variant. The ones labelled as such are:

  • Autonomous Emergency Braking
  • Lane Departure Warning System
  • Forward Collision Warning System
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Blind Spot Detection
  • Auto High Beam

This is actually the second time that the Perodua Axia has undergone the ASEAN NCAP assessment. This time around, the new 2023 Perodua Axia managed to get the four-star rating via the more stringent 2021-2025 assessment protocol. In other words, the four-star rating from 2021 onwards meant a lot more compared to the four-star rating the previous-gen Axia received back in 2014.

While the older Perodua Bezza received five stars back in 2016, the assessment requirements at the time were more 'relaxed' compared to the current one introduced in 2021 which also included Safety Assist and Motorcyclist Safety to the already implemented Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection.
