Volvo Cars is on a mission to present itself as a top luxury brand and this is another product to drive that point home. Following the reveal of the Volvo XC90 Excellence, the brand is poised to introduce another luxury XC90 model at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show.
Known as the Lounge Console, the concept aims to provide the ultimate in-car experience for the busy chauffeur-driven business people of today.
See, Volvo understand just what the modern business person needs. As Volvo Car’s senior vice president of design Thomas Ingenlath puts it, “People who are on the move and have a hectic lifestyle going from event to event or meeting to meeting need some space, some luxury time, and the opportunity to relax and refresh themselves for the next engagement. This is ultimately what the Lounge Console is designed to facilitate.”
For that to happen, Volvo first removed the front passenger seat, allowing for more open space, at least for one of the rear occupants. From there, Volvo Car’s designers utilised ethnographic research data and set out to create a unique passenger experience.
A large multi-function work table is the first item that greets the passenger. Open it up and an illuminated vanity mirror is revealed, including a storage tray for any jewellery, personal accessories, or make-up.
The electric-powered table is also capable of rotating 90 degrees and when sent forward, flips over to reveal a large 17-inch media screen to provide the full in-car theatre experience.
Should the long business day leave your legs feeling fatigued, place them on the cushioned leg rest after you have stowed your shoes in the area below it. And if you need to swap watches before arriving at your next meeting, there’s a storage space that can hold your other watches as well.
As for the other passenger in the rear, not much pampering is catered towards him/her. Where there is a 17-inch media screen to look at on the other side, there is instead a coat hanger instead. At least there’s electric-powered seats and a small table.
