BMW Add G14 8 Series Convertible – Drop Top Elegance

BMW has pulled the covers off the all-new 8 Series Convertible, the second body style of the new generation 8 Series that was introduced back in June 2018.

As the name suggests, the all-new 8 Series Convertible is a drop top version of the 8 Series, codenamed G14. At a touch of a button, the roof can open and close within 15 seconds, with speeds of up to 50 km/h. Customers can have their soft-top roof either in black or Anthracite Silver.

The soft top does eat into boot space, as the 8 Series Convertible’s boot space comes in at 350 litres, as opposed to the Coupe’s 420 litre boot space.

Also unique to the 8 Series Convertible are the wind deflector and soft top cover with domes and surround stitching, which aren’t available on the 8 Series Coupe.

Two variants were announced – the 840d xDrive and M850i xDrive. In the 840d xDrive, a 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel inline-6 pumps out 320 hp and 680 Nm. As for the more potent M850i xDrive, power is derived from a 4.4-litre turbocharged V8 that does 530 hp and 750 Nm.

The 840d xDrive completes the century sprint in 5.2 seconds, while the M850i xDrive shaves its 0-100 km/h time to just 3.9 seconds. Both cars have an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h.

BMW is also offering the M Sport package for the 840d xDrive, adding:

  • Front skirt with larger air intakes
  • Unique side and rear skirts
  • 19-inch M alloy wheels
  • M Sport brakes
  • M leather steering wheel
  • M illuminated door sills

The M Sport package is also available for the M850i xDrive, which adds:

  • Front spoiler extension
  • 20-inch M alloy wheels
  • High performance tires
  • M Sport brakes
  • Cerium Grey exterior trim
  • Stainless steel mesh design for interior trim strips
  • Illuminated door sills with model badge

The all-new 8 Series Convertible is expected to go on sale in selected markets from March 2019 onwards.
