Porsche’s New 650PS 911 Turbo S Is (More) Speed Without Compromise

Every generation of the Porsche 911 has to be accompanied by a Turbo to crown the range, so the pattern goes, and about a year after the first of the 992-generation car was unveiled, the automaker has rolled out their newest one yet.

Seen here in Turbo S guise, basically a slightly more powerful and better specified version of the Turbo, re-engineered and evolved over its immediate predecessor to offer a sizeable bump in performance that’s more dramatic than the expected Porsche-style incremental.

Case in point, its 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat-six now pushes out 650PS (around 641hp) and a mammoth 800Nm thanks to a new cooling and intake system as well as a pair of new turbochargers. Importantly, sustained delivery of peak outputs on overboost is sustained for longer and is available on-demand, unlike before.

The result of that 70PS and 50Nm rise in power and torque is a 0-100km/h sprint time of just 2.7 seconds (0.2s better than the last Turbo S), though this is also thanks to the improvements made to the all-wheel drive system and 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Wearing a body that’s instantly familiar but bearing the subtle changes that the 992 introduced over the 991, this newest Turbo/Turbo S has also been made wider.

With a front track that’s 10mm wider at the rear and 42mm wider up front, the car measures almost 2 metres across - a far cry from the compact dimensions of its earliest ancestor.

To improve aerodynamics at speed, Porsche has also fitted the Turbo with an extendable front splitter and a rear wing combo that promises 15% more downforce than the outgoing model.

Of course, this being the commonly regarded flagship in the 911 family, there’s luxuries such as a full leather interior, the full suite of tech and convenience features, and even a BOSE Surround Sound system. And there’s a Cabriolet version, too, if that’s your thing.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
