2021 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4Matic+ Launched In Malaysia. RM1,118,888 For 612HP Super Saloon

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia’s range of fast AMG models has just been expanded with the introduction of the E 63 S 4Matic+, specifically the refreshed (or facelifted) version of the car for the 2021 model year.

Like the super saloon it supplants in the line-up, it’s based on the W213 E-Class facelift, but has now been updated with styling changes, and an optimised equipment list, and a price tag of RM1,118,888 on-the-road without insurance with includes 10% SST.

This does indicate that, despite its Malaysian launch in 2021, deliveries of these fully imported Mercedes-AMG’s are only expected to be carried out in 2022 when the sales tax exemption period has expired - unless, of course, the government chooses to extend it yet again beyond the current December 31st, 2021 deadline.

Over the pre-facelift car, this E 63 S 4Matic+ receives the much more aggressive Panamericana grille up front flanked by a very subtly tweaked headlamp design and slimmer tail lights to match the most recent non-AMG E-Classes that arrived in late July. The E 63 S also gains the AMG Night Package as standard, giving gloss black accents to certain exterior elements such as the side mirror caps, window frames, and bumpers.

Its 20-inch alloys are also of a different design with twin 5-spokes, and hiding behind them are 390mm front brake discs up front and 360mm discs at the rear, all accented with red callipers. The AMG Exterior Carbon-Fibre Package I has also been added to the list of standard fitments, from which the E 63 S receives a carbon front splitter, rear apron strip, and fender trim made from the lightweight material.

Mercedes-AMG has seemingly left the M178 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine untouched with this 2021 revision, which produces identical peak figures of 612PS and 850Nm as its 2017 forebear. Armed with the AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission and the AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, the 0-100km/h sprint is dealt with in just 3.4 seconds while top speed is 300km/h.

To ensure the new E 63 S rides as serenely as a Mercedes-Benz should despite its performance credentials, each car is fitted with the AMG Ride Control+ multi-chamber air suspension system, ADS+ adaptive dampers, and speed-sensitive steering for a highly engaging but customisable driving experience through AMG Dynamic Select.

With the system set to RACE, there’s even an integrated Drift Mode that’s activated through the shift paddles when the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is manually disabled, allowing the car to decouple the front wheels and lock the electronic rear differential, effectively becoming a rear-drive tyre shredder.

Additionally, each E 63 S gets Mercedes-Benz’s MULTIBEAM LED headlights, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, 360-degree camera, Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC, Driving Assistance Package which includes Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Adaptive Cruise Control (though Mercedes-Benz calls it Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC…..)

Inside, even when hooning around, the E 63 S’ cabin remains a space of luxury, craftsmanship, and refinement. Like the regular E-Class, it now adopts MBUX with its expansive twin 12.3-inch displays that integrate infotainment and a fully digital instrument cluster.  Of course, there’s built-in LTE connectivity for Mercedes me connected car services, Qi wireless smartphone charging, and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
