Lotus Cars Might Do Something No Other Traditional Carmaker Has Done Before

Insights

Lotus seems to be not just at the cusp of a renaissance of its business but also at the tipping point of becoming one of the most notable sportscar brands of the current era. Despite its chequered history starting in the 1950s – in which it enjoyed prolific highs in motorsports and the silver screen (cue Mr. Bond), to periods of gloom under the ownership of brands that include General Motors, Bugatti and Proton (yes, this too). It would seem that Lotus had little to shout about not too long ago.

Ayrton Senna and Lotus s97

Now, however, resting under the collective might of Geely, Lotus is not only set to grow its business but create a product strategy that may see it do something many more successful carmakers would struggle to or not even be able to do – totally rebuild itself from the ground up as a no-holes-barred electric sportscar manufacturer.

First, they celebrate one last swansong of its existing heritage with the Lotus Emira

2021 Lotus Emira

The soon to be launched Lotus Emira will be the last Lotus to be powered by an internal combustion engine. Though details are scarce before the July 6th, 2021 reveal, there will be no hybridisation of the powertrain, and the engine will be derived from a “new powertrain partner” with options that are “new to Lotus.” If we’re ruling out hybridisation, and it’s new to Lotus (unlike naturally aspirated and supercharged, turbocharged not seen since the Esprit) – then there’s only one other option: turbocharged, and we know Lotus’ “sibling” Volvo, are very good at this.

The Emira will be based on the company’s brand new “Elemental” platform that features extruded aluminium and Lotus’ familiar bonding technologies to keep weight low, with the bones stiff, offering up that signature Lotus driving dynamics. The Emira’s design is inspired by the Type 131 which is more production-ready than a concept at this point.

Lotus Elise, Evora and Exige

Then Emira will replace the Lotus Elise, Exige, and Evora – three bread and butter models that despite their relative age remain lauded by enthusiasts and race fans alike all over the world.

The final send-off to internal combustion power marks the new chapter of electric power: Vision80

The Lotus Emira then is a celebration of the seminal lightweight sports car – and few other companies arguably make it as special as Lotus.

Lotus Evija

In one swoop, Lotus will revitalise its model range and provide the last hurrah that reminds the world of its storied heritage and engineering prowess. The Emira will serve as an entry-level introduction to the brand, while an entirely new range of products – which not only includes sports cars but SUVs and hatchbacks, can be designed and developed to enter profitable new market segments.

Under new owners Geely and Etika Automotive (which took over in 2017) – Lotus etched out a plan called Vision80 (unveiled in 2018) – a 10-year roadmap that will see the company turn into a profitable company, that aims for annual production in the hundreds of thousands before the company celebrates its 80th anniversary.

Lotus Evija Headquarters

By 2028 – Lotus wants to be an electric-only car manufacturer – despite its relatively small size and footprint, a 10-year deadline (one which is already four years in) will require an entire revamp of its drivetrain strategy, as well as its production activities and supply chain, though Lotus can leverage heavily on Geely’s wide-ranging supplier network to speed up the process and reduce costs while they’re at it.

How serious is Lotus about going electric?

The biggest and baddest example of how serious Lotus is about electric propulsion has been exhibited with the groundbreaking 2,000PS Evija electric hypercar. Power is delivered from four electric motors with a target top speed of more than 320km/h. Not only will it be the most powerful vehicle in the world (let alone BEV) – it is also among the lightest at approximately 1,680kg.  Thus applying the company’s hallmark engineering principles to an entirely new genre of car.

Lotus Evija Goodwood

The Evija, remains in prototype form, and is currently in the final stages of its testing programme, before a tentative production rollout slated for later this year. Separately, the company has also been hard at work completing the state of the art production facility that will build the Evija at its home base of Hethel in Norfolk, UK.

The Evija will be underpinned by the cutting-edge “Extreme” platform, which will be joined by another two platforms. The first is dubbed the “Evolution” which will underpin a new range of lifestyle vehicles that has been reportedly developed with other companies under Geely in China, Sweden and Germany – so that provides a good hint of who is working with Lotus.

Lotus SUV 2022Image credit: Autocar UK

The final platform – will be called “E-Sports” which will be co-developed by Lotus and Renault-owned Alpine which is also in the midst of its own resurrection from a relative niche brand to a mainstream sportscar maker. The E-Sports platform is reported to be flexible and modular – and is expected to underpin everything from hatchback to small sportscars.

Therefore, with four new platforms and synergies forged from far and wide, Lotus are well on their way to creating a comprehensive range of new electrified vehicles for an entirely new range of markets and customers.

Does Lotus have the money and resources to do it?

In a word, yes. Geely is reportedly planning a move to raise USD 1 Billion to grow Lotus' electric business in China, according to Bloomberg. Additionally, the larger Zheijiang Geely Group’s new USD 1.3 Billion plant in Wuhan, China, which has 150,000 units capacity annually, upon its tentative completion in 2022 will serve as a manufacturing hub, not just for Lotus but other brands under the Geely umbrella as well.

Lotus Evija Manufacturing

Back home, Lotus announced it was investing another GBP 100 million in its headquarters in Hethel earlier this year. This follows another announcement in 2020, in which Lotus has moved some of its metal and chassis fabrication work to a new facility in Norwich.

According to Managing Director of Lotus Cars, Matt Windle, the Vision80 plan in its entirety will cost more than GBP 2 Billion but is said to have the financial backing from both its principal owners Geely (51 percent) and Malaysian-based Etika Automotive (49 percent).

Lotus may do what others can only dream of…

Lotus’ revamp will not be easy, and it will be hard-fought for years to come.

Lotus Type 18 Stirling Moss

However, given their sublime prowess in engineering, design, and ingenuity – they are very much like Volvo was just 10 years ago. A well-known manufacturer redolent with heritage, and technological know-how, but without the financial strength and supply chain to truly create the products that would have made it a true competitor to the likes of BMW and Audi.

A lot of that has changed under Geely's ownership – having broken the 700k unit annual sales mark in 2019, and holding strong despite the pandemic in 2020 (with 661k units) – they’re well on their way to becoming an exciting alternative to other luxury brands.

2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge

However, where Volvo’s passenger car beginnings meant that it still had to create cars that appeal to the masses – Lotus’ traditional buyer base has from its beginning, been an enthusiast and gentleman’s racer outfit. Most Lotus owners drive their cars to the track, drive it even harder, and then drive it back home – their journeys are planned and measured – an aspect that bodes very well for a performance electric car.

With most tracks around the world realising the need for fast DC charging on-site – enjoying your emission-free Lotus is as easy as plugging it in. Also with Lotus' hallmark engineering ethos of keeping their cars light and simple – they could be the best electric cars to drive on the track, or anywhere else. Additionally, Lotus’ enthusiasts and traditional affluent buyer base could also be easily converted to become early adopters of an entirely new genre of the sports car.

2021 Porsche Taycan

This is why a large majority of Porsche Taycan owners, in particular, the Turbo and Turbo S variant buyers already have a 911 Turbo or 911 GT model sitting in their driveway, and want to translate that Porsche driving experience into the electric sphere of motoring. Although Porsche is yet another company, despite its rich motorsports heritage, it needs to make incremental and evolutionary steps to not alienate its traditional buyer base.

Lotus will not need to do this – they will be rebuilt as an electric-only brand without the need to make the expensive intermediary steps of hybridisation. In many ways, Lotus’ small and flexible footprint, and highly respected presence for over 70 years but without the paraphernalia of a mass buyer base, are the perfect elements for it to become a truly special carmaker of the modern electric era.

11th Generation All-New Honda Civic vs 10th Generation Honda Civic - What's New?

Auto News

It’s back ladies and gents. The 11th-generation Honda Civic has officially been introduced for the US market. The transcendent sedan from Honda now returns with a revamped design, inside and out, improved chassis dynamics, as well as better safety equipment and updated powertrains.

Though for now only in its U.S. market form, which usually differs from the model the European and ASEAN markets receive, let’s check out what's new.

Design

2022 All-New USDM Honda Civic dimensions

At the front, the 11th-gen Civic sports the latest three-dimensional and wide front grille which is flanked by sleek headlights with an L-shaped DRL light signature. Round the flanks, the car’s glasshouse has been pushed back (at the front) and stretched at the rear (much like the Accord) to give the Civic a low-slung coupe-like silhouette. The characteristic kink in the bodyline just before the C-Pillar is another nod to the Accord’s design cues.

2022 All-New USDM Honda Civic side

Round the back, Honda has ditched the love it or hate it C-shaped “ketam taillights” for a cleaner, more streamlined rear lights with L-shaped graphics. The rear also features a curved duck-tail boot edge for an extra dose of sporty. The US market also receives contrasting coloured or dual-tone finished wheels depending on variant.

Interior

2022 All-New USDM Honda Civic Interior

On the inside – the interior has been redesigned for a far more premium outlook. A detailed honeycomb mesh accent now runs the width of the dashboard which neatly integrates the air-conditioning vents. Up top, the touchscreen infotainment system is offered in 7- and 9-inch sizes depending on variant. Down the centre, the centre console features a main cubby space with an integrated Qi-wireless charge port (certain variants), and further back, the gear shifter and usual drivetrain controls are accompanied by two cupholders.

2022 All-New USDM Honda Civic infotainment

The new Civic also benefits from a new front-seat design. Using Honda’s Body Stabilizing Seat approach, the new-generation seat frame firmly holds the body, enhancing comfort on long drives.

2022 All-New USDM Honda Civic cluster

The ‘Touring’ variant of the US market Civic notably gets a 12-speaker Bose sound system, the same variant also receives a Civic-first 10.2-inch full-LCD instrument cluster display.

Powertrain

2022 All-New USDM Honda Civic engine

The US market receives two four-cylinder engine choices: A naturally aspirated (NA) 2.0-litre or a turbocharged 1.5-litre. The 1.5-litre turbo which is more familiar to us has been updated to produce 180 hp at 6,000 rpm and 240Nm of torque between 1,700rpm and 4,500rpm (87 octane fuel) – those figures represent a 6hp and 20Nm gain over the previous model. The 2.0-litre NA engine outputs 158hp and 187Nm of torque.

2022 All-New USDM Honda Civic CVT gearbox

Both engines are paired with an updated continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) uniquely tuned for each engine. The revised CVT enhances fuel efficiency by using a more robust electric hydraulic pump which reduces the load on the mechanical pump, and a ball-bearing secondary shaft to reduce friction. The transmission has been programmed to provide early downshifts during braking and stepped-gearshifts during hard acceleration to simulate physical gear changes for more driver engagement.

Body and Chassis

2022 All-New USDM Honda Civic chassis

The new Civic’s body structure scores an 8 percent improvement in torsional rigidity and 13 percent improvement in bending rigidity versus the previous generation. Building on Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) structure, the body is designed to meet current and future crash standards courtesy of extensive use of lightweight materials, such as aluminum and various grades of high-strength steel, as well as an expanded application of structural adhesives.

The chassis has been tuned to take advantage of the stiffer shell and increased wheelbase for a smoother ride.

The front MacPherson struts feature new low-friction ball joints and front damper mount bearings to improve steering feel and self-centering. The spring and damper alignment has been optimized to produce less friction during operation. The rear also gains a wider track width and gets two rear lower arms that are equipped with a new bushing that reduces vibrations, and enhances stability and turn-in dynamics.

2022 All-New USDM Honda exterior

Additionally, the electronic power steering has been re-tuned to provide better feedback and improved straight-line stability.

Safety Features

The Civic features a newly designed three-chamber 'donut-shaped' airbag on both its frontal airbags to reduce the rotation of the occupant’s head in the event of a collision. A total of 10 airbags are offered as standard in the US market Civic.

2022 All-New USDM Honda Sensing

Elsewhere, the A-pillar structure, side frame and lower firewall structure have been designed to route crash energy around the cabin. Side impact protection also has been improved, with stiffer structures in the roof, side sill and B-pillar, doors, and the rear wheel arch and C-pillar.

The standard-fit Honda Sensing suite of driver-assistance technologies uses a new single-camera system that provides a wider field of view than the previous radar-and-camera based system. Combined with software advances and a new, more powerful processor, the system can more quickly and accurately identify pedestrians, bicyclists, and other vehicles, along with road lines and road sign.

The Honda Sensing ADAS suite features the following features:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low Speed Follow (LSF)
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)
  • Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS)
  • Road Departure Mitigation (RDM)
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Auto High-Beam (AHB)

2022 All-New USDM Honda Civic ACC

The system now adds Traffic Jam Assist. The new camera-based system improves existing functionality, such as more natural brake application and quicker reactions when using Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).

Production

The US market Civic will be produced at Honda’s Alliston plant in Ontario Canada, while a hatchback model – which will join later on – will be made in Honda’s Greensburg Indiana plant (after closing its Swindon, UK plant). Prices and launch dates will be announced for the US in due time.

Same Same, But Different: Toyota Raize vs Daihatsu Rocky vs Perodua Ativa

Insights

We break down the major differences between the Perodua Ativa, Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize.

The recent debut of the Toyota Raize and Daihatsu Rocky in Indonesia means that the Perodua Ativa will not be exported there, which means that Perodua will be able to focus on satisfying local demand which is of course good news for all of you waiting for your new Perodua Ativa.

Since Daihatsu, Toyota and Perodua all had a say in the SUV's design at some point, many of its features will remain consistent across all three models, however, there are some differences between the fraternal triplets, so let's break it down.

Perdoua Ativa VS Daihatsu Rocky VS Toyota RaizeThe facial differences

The most apparent difference between the three SUVs is the front fascia. While they are all equipped with the same trapezoidal LED headlights, the smiley-faced grille on the Ativa is much larger than the one on the Daihatsu. The Toyota Raize sports an entirely different look altogether, with a slim gloss black strip at the top with a downturned lower grille at the bottom.

DRL Toyota Raize, Perodua Ativa, Daihatsu RockyDifferent Day Time Running Lights

The other major difference at the front is the bumper-mounted LED daytime running lights on the Raize and Rocky. The Ativa only gets LED positioning lights in the headlights of the range-topping models, doubling as sequential indicators.

Toyota Ativa, Daihatsu Rocky WheelsWheels and tyre

The Ativa's 17-inch wheel design is different from the Raize and Rocky.  Toyota equipped theirs with a six-spoke design and Daihatsu supplied theirs with a five-spoke design. The Perodua has a ten-spoke design, with five of them coloured in black.

Also different are the 16-inch Ativa wheels, which have more of a split-spoke design rather than the turbine look of the others. The tyre sizes are also different on the Ativa, being slightly taller and wider at 205/60R17 and 205/65R16, versus the Rocky's and Raize's 195/60R17 and 195/65R16.

Perdoua Ativa VS Daihatsu Rocky VS Toyota Raize ride heightSuspension

Perodua has equipped the Ativa with a stiffer suspension setup, catering to Malaysia's love for a sporty handling car. According to Perodua, the Ativa also rides 15 mm taller than the others (200mm vs 185mm) to better suit Malaysia's rough roads. However, in the writer's opinion, the taller ride height is more likely due to Malaysians penchant for commanding looking cars.

Perdoua Ativa VS Daihatsu Rocky VS Toyota Raize keyless entryKeyless entry

The Ativa's keyless entry system with touch-sensitive lock/unlock sensor is only fitted on the driver's door, while the Rocky and Raize have this on both the front doors, making it more convenient to operate. One thing common in this department: all of them get the keyless unlock function at the tailgate.

Perdoua Ativa VS Daihatsu Rocky VS Toyota Raize interiorInterior

Before we get into what's different inside, the cars are mostly identical on the interior front, with all of them getting the same dashboard design with hexagonal air vents and floating head units. The three-spoke steering wheels are all the same too.

The Raize and Rocky get round climate control knobs, while the Ativa on the other hand, sports a flat digital control panel with two memory buttons first seen on the current generation Myvi. The Ativa also gets a dedicated door lock/unlock button in the middle of the centre console next to the handbrake, but the Raize and Rocky do not get this feature.

According to some, the head unit on the Ativa is not the best, that might be because it is locally sourced but we had no complaints about the unit whatsoever during our review. It has the same nine-inch touchscreen size as the Daihatsu and Toyota, but the interface on the Ativa looks a little non-OEM. The Ativa also doesn't have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making do with the Smart Link mirroring feature.

The Ativa gets a different seat upholstery combination compared to its Japanese cousins, coming with faux cowhide, accented with faux suede and red accents. The Raize and Rocky, on the other hand, get a classy looking faux leather and fabric combination.

Perodua Ativa, Daihatsu Rocky, Toyota Raize drivetrainDrivetrain

All three models are powered by a 1.0 litre 1KR-VET turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 98 PS at 6,000 rpm and 140 Nm of torque from 2,400 to 4,000 rpm.

There is a different powertrain option in Indonesia, with the Toyota Raize 1.2 G being powered by the WA-VE 1.2 litre naturally-aspirated three-cylinder engine that develops 88 PS at 6,000 rpm and 113 Nm at 4,500 rpm.

The Rocky will get this powertrain later on with a regular CVT transmission.

Front-wheel drive and D-CVT with seven virtual ratios is the only configuration available for the Ativa, but the Rocky and the Raize will get the option to have a five-speed manual as well as 4WD.

The All-New 2021 Isuzu D-Max - The All-Activity Pickup For Work And Play

Insights

The catchphrases ‘premium’ and ‘lifestyle’ are increasingly thrown around in the sphere of the automotive market – but few cars and even fewer manufacturers actually meet or understand the criteria of creating a car that combines these two contrasting traits in perfect symbiosis.

Let’s say you are looking at a premium SUV, i.e.: sporting a snazzy bodykit, large wheels and a swanky interior – ask yourself, will the interior hold up to the mud from the shoes and hands of an intrepid explorer? Would the sleek bodykit shatter at the sight of a large rock? Would the wheels handle the abuse of an off-road trail? Perhaps, no.

2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain rear badge

Then what about lifestyle… what good is a superb looking interior without the cargo space for your gear, a high-performance engine without the dependability that really allows you to take the road less traveled, and snazzy styling without the toughness to take you both in and out of your chosen adventure?

More often than not, the cars that manage the duality of purpose first need to have a proven base from which to start with. A track-honed Porsche 911 GT3 is nothing without first being a great Porsche 911, and likewise, an all-activity vehicle, that really goes anywhere and does everything – is nothing if it is not a sublime vehicle in the first place.

Introducing the All-New Isuzu D-Max 3.0L X-Terrain

2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain exterior

Wait, that is a pickup truck… and yes you’d be right! However, with over a century of expertise in creating some of the toughest and most rugged vehicles ever sold – they have the perfect understanding of first engineering the perfect base for creating a vehicle that sets the benchmark in terms of being able to do anything, and more importantly, go wherever your adventure takes you!

2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain rear

The All-New 2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain now brings to the fore a proven mechanical platform that seamlessly blends the usability and toughness of a pickup truck with the trappings of luxury befitting the most discerning of expectations.

A pickup truck for work… and play!

At first sight, the sheer size and stature of the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain speak of presence and individuality. Far from the more utilitarian nature of its predecessor – the all-new D-Max X-Terrain mixes sporty styling and sporty colours with the overall proportions of a traditional pickup truck.

2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain front LED headlights

A front fascia that means business is highlighted by sleek-looking Automatic Bi-LED headlamps to provide a unique visual signature. Come round the sides, and the D-Max impresses with taut bodylines and muscular proportions courtesy of wide overfenders and 18-inch alloy wheels, giving it a brawny style.

2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain rear bumper

Round the back, look closely or you’ll miss the integrated rear bumper that joins seamlessly to the rest of the car's body architecture, giving the D-Max X-Terrain a clean rounded look, unlike others within its segment. LED rear taillights likewise flank a traditional rear tailgate equipped with Isuzu’s “tailgate assist” function for a nice functional, yet technical finish.

A tough yet classy interior

2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain Interior

Open the wide doors of the D-Max X-Terrain and find a contrasting coloured and cossetting leather interior – notice the ergonomically designed front seats and the overall architecture that highlight functionality and minimalism. Everything in its place, and a place for everything. The rear cabin space is equally well-engineered for both the family (and your friends) with spacious rear headroom and legroom to impress even the fussiest of passengers.

2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain Interior

Soft leather trims the most important interior touchpoints such as the seats and steering wheel – while the automatic dual-zone climate control system, steering wheel-mounted controls and 8-way powered driver’s seat ensure you have a comfortable and fuss-free place to be in even on the longest journeys. Seven-airbags yet again make the insides of a D-Max X-Terrain one of the safest zones for you and your family.

Power and reliability that goes anywhere…

2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain offroad

Drivetrain engineering is an aspect that Isuzu rarely needs to speak about. Developed from millions of miles of reliability and honed (locally) from the experience of 11 completed Borneo Safari Expeditions on the backs of their trucks – durability, reliability, and fuel efficiency is at the heart of every Isuzu vehicle.

Built on Isuzu's new Dynamic Drive platform – it’s larger, higher and wider than before with more structural reinforcements. This ensures greater toughness, better driving dynamics which is required, because of all the power the D-Max X-Terrain delivers.

2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain engine

Powered by the latest generation 4JJ3-TCX engine with a new common-rail injection system, and an electronically controlled VGS turbocharger, the X-Terrain’s power unit outputs 190PS and a whopping 450Nm of torque between 1,600rpm - 2,600rpm. Power is sent to all four wheels through a new 6-speed automatic transmission – governed by Isuzu’s ‘Terrain Command’ 4WD system which allows switching between 2H and 4H modes (while driving) within 0.61 seconds.

2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain Wheels

Separately, a rear differential lock – offered when in the X-Terrain’s most aggressive 4WD-Low Range mode offers a 50/50 percent torque split between both rear wheels to ensure you get out of the toughest off-road obstacles. Another crucial development of the all-new Isuzu D-Max is its water wading ability – with some clever engineering, the D-Max is now able to pass through standing water of up to 800mm with no issues.

Packing both brawn and intelligence…

2021 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain ADAS

Of course, just being tough is not enough in this day and age, that’s why the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain is equipped with a comprehensive suite of Active Driver Assistance Systems or ADAS functions that help keep you and all your passengers safe.

The comprehensive suite of ADAS which include a number of first in class features elevate the D-Max X-Terrain beyond the boundaries of pickup truck and into the realm of premium SUV offerings with the following:

  • Blind Spot Monitor (BSM)
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Turn Assist
  • Pedal Misapplication Mitigation
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Automatic High Beam (AHB)
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

Drive it to believe it…

Kereta Mewah Dengan Harga Tak Masuk Akal – Jangan Tertipu Dengan Kereta Klon

Auto News

Ikut kata mudah, supply and demand. Kalau tiada permintaan, tiadalah penawaran.

kereta klon,sindiket,jenayah,singapura,pendaftaran palsu

Kereta Klon + Cukai Jalan Asli = Harga Tinggi

kereta klon,sindiket,jenayah,singapura,pendaftaran palsu

kereta klon,sindiket,jenayah,singapura,pendaftaran palsu
